Mission Statement Versus a Business Continuity Plan

The Mission Statement and the Business Continuity Plan are two totally different but equally important business documents without which your business is probably doomed for failure. So what is the difference between these two very important business start up documents?

The Mission Statement is a short document that sets out the ethos, way of working and ultimate aim of your business. Many are as short as two paragraphs. An example of a service based company would be: To aim to serve our customers quickly and efficiently, garnering only respect and loyalty. A company that is more focussed on low prices may have a Mission Statement that states: We aim to offer the lowest prices in our market place such that we gain the maximum market share without compromising the quality of our services or lose the respect of our customers.

As you can see a company’s mission statement feeds down to staff priorities, product qualitative and pricing, customer service aims, technology employed and market share being pursued.

Think of a company such as Ryan Air or South West Airlines which focuses on low costs and compare it with a service based company such as Rolls Royce, Marks and Spencer, SkyLofts at MGM Grand and you can see how their different Mission Statements affects the service and products they provide.

The Business Continuity Plan on the other hand is usually a long comprehensive document that deals with how your business will handle potential disasters and major problems such as fire, theft, earth quakes, terrorist activities, strikes etc.

Whilst many company directors do not like to think of these things happening to their companies or believe that it will not happen to them a Business Continuity Plan is an extremely important document to not only have but regularly update.

A good Business Continuity Plan will look at the important parts of a business: People, Customers, Technology, Buildings and Stock and define what needs to be done for a particular emergency. It will look at three different phases: Immediate action, business maintenance and lastly returning to normality.

For example in the Immediate action phase, there will be details of contact lists, assigned roles and required activities to be undertaken when the disaster happens. The aim being to get the company up and running, if only in a minimal manner. The business maintenance phase will involve aiming to serve customers in the best manner and the returning to normality phase will involve returning the company to the format it was in before the disaster.

As you can see the Mission Statement is totally different to the Business Continuity Plan, but both are vitally important to the structure and well being of any company.

Three Big Reasons Why You Don’t Need a Clever Business Name to Attract Clients

Are you struggling to come up with your business name? This can be one of the biggest stumbling blocks for people who are starting a new business. You want to get the name right, maybe have something clever or memorable.   2. Cleverness can put people off. Not everyone is attracted to clever names. Personally, I start to wonder what’s behind the cutesiness, as if the owner is compensating for something. It’s not always true obviously, but I tend to believe the proof is in the pudding, not the sauce if you know what I mean. A clever name does not guarantee you’ll attract clients.
  3. A clever name can be misunderstood. Some people won’t get the point of your cleverness. If you don’t hit the nail on the head, you can end up confusing prospects which will not help you attract clients and build business. On the other hand, a results-oriented name can clearly communicate what clients or customers will gain by working with you. A business title that uses the desired outcome gets right to the solution clients seek making it easy for them to say, “I want that!”

For these three reasons, I recommend to new business owners and start-ups that they choose a company name that is simple, clear and to the point rather than sweat over the goal of crafting a perfect or clever name.

Next make a list of the best words from what you wrote for describing what you do. Then put them together in combinations to see what jumps out at you.
